Europe on strike against austerity
It is the day of the first European strike against austerity. In 4 countries: Italy, Portugal, Greece and Spain workers cross their arms in the common struggle against the social costs of cuts and huge unemployment. In Italy only the CGIL has held four hours of general strike.
Students and teachers have led the protest across the country, scheduled demonstrations in more than 20 cities. General strike in Spain since the dawn of today:
“This situation has its roots in European politics, imposed by the Commission and on the orders of Berlin and the Spanish government not only accepts, goes beyond” – says Candido Mendez, general secretary of the UGT
About forty unions involved in 23 European countries where initiatives of solidarity, have also been held towards those who suffer the consequences of the crisis. “The reality is not shown, it is concealed in Germany or in France – said a protester in Madrid – it’s like , a virus that will spread throughout Europe and I do not know how the euro will resist.”
In Spain it is the second general strike in a year which calls on the participation of ordinary, not organized citizens.
Same goal in Portugal: “We started this fight not only for the rights of workers but for all the rights of future generations, for our children, we are fighting for the future of the country.” The Unions calling the strike have organized demonstrations and protests in about forty countries, from Porto to Lisbon.
